Blackberry finally gets touchy feely

Well, the one thing that Blackberry has stayed true to throughout the ages is that they do messaging. They are the Gods when it comes to mobile messaging. Email, text, PIN and BBM (Blackberry Messenger) you cannot get any better on the market.

The one thing that they were falling behind on was hardware. Giving ‘ol yella’ the face lift it needed to stay pertinent in the new age of ‘who has the biggest screen, clearest camera, best media player etc.’

The main hurdle RIM faced with their Blackberry was touch screen text input. I had a Storm and a Storm 2. I was bitterly disappointed with both. Only a matter of months into having them both I was unable to type letters on the extreme sides of the keyboard, ie. qaz and plm. It would seem that Blackberry didn’t know how to tackle the touch screen scourge.

After hearing about Blackberry OS6 and its updates on the past BB OS5 I was excited to be honest. Could you really improve on the perfection of an OS that truly was, in my mind at least, infallible?

The short answer to this question is; “HELLS YES THEY CAN!” I picked up my new Blackberry Torch at my local Optus shop on a business timeless plan, took it home, charged it up good for around 16 hours and began my journey into Blackberry OS6.

First thing that I noticed was an extreme increase in boot up time, a good 2-3 mins. Once booted however, everything changed. The home screen with its soft areas, universal search and the tray! Fantastic idea! The OS is a dream to navigate and all touch areas are big enough and intuitive enough to never have you touching the wrong option.

The text input on this device is somehow better than you’d expect from the slide out Blackberry QWERTY keyboard as well as the portrait and landscape on screen keyboard. Phantom touches are non existent, speed is slower than on the keyboard, however that’s expected as anyone that’s ever had a Blackberry before can tell stories of seeing their thumbs turn from tangible, solid matter to blurs of typing furry.

The best thing I noticed about Blackberry OS6 is the updates for the teen age Blackberry user; the media player, much, much better. Viewing video is a dream with the new UI and upgraded codecs meaning that you can watch many more types of video including .avi. The web experience for Blackberry OS6 is remarkably better than previous attempts. The threaded messaging application is displayed quite nicely with bubble style conversations and contact information available from the same screen. Blackberry’s attempt at an application store akin to the iStore and the Android App Market is a little bit better in this edition however it still lacks the polished off looks of the iStore and the sheer volume of applications of it’s competition. In saying this however, it does provide many useful apps for the business minded Power User, it just needs to reconnect to the average Joe user and the teenage component of the market.
If you’re looking for a fantastic all round device that will meet any expectation you may have (except for the amount of 3rd party applications on offer) the Blackberry Torch is the answer. Plus, with Optus offering the BIS package for free and the addition of BBM, messaging your other friends with Blackberry’s is essentially free, who doesn’t love free messaging?!
